Dr. Cano earned her PhD in Counseling Psychology from New Mexico State University. She received her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and a Bachelor of Science from University of Houston-Victoria. She completed an internship from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology Internship Consortium at a residential treatment center for children and teens in IL. She received post-doctoral hours providing individual and group therapy in a Juvenile Justice setting in NY and provided play therapy and family therapy for a non-profit agency in Northern California. She is licensed in the state of California.
Dr. Cano has been working with children and families for 20 years. She is able to provide individual and family therapy. Modalities that she uses are CBT, DBT, solution focused brief therapy and play therapy. She has worked with diverse clients and provides culturally sensitive as well as Gay affirming and Transgender affirming services. As a Counseling Psychologist, Dr. Cano has interest in multicultural issues as well as how to help clients improve well-being while considering familial/systemic factors. In addition, Dr. Cano can provide career counseling services and has worked in psychiatric emergency settings providing crisis management and evaluation. She has experience working with clients presenting with a number of issues that include depression, anxiety, substance abuse, personality disorders, trauma and severe and persistent mental illness. Dr. Cano takes a strength-based approach with clients, using evidence-based interventions to assist clients with enhancing well-being.
My job is to create a safe environment for clients to explore thoughts/feelings and family/relationship dynamics. We will build trust and a therapeutic relationship that allows clients to accomplish goals they have set. Clients will be empowered to practice healthy coping skills in session so that they will feel confident utilizing these skills in their daily lives and with important people in their lives.
